Extinguish the flame of the Olympic Torch as it runs through the streets of San Francisco in this brand (!) new flash game. Its a nice peace of art. I was able to extinuish the flame twice - hehe!

Erste Professur für die Kunst Afrikas in Deutschland

Die Freie Universität Berlin erhält als erste Universität in Deutschland einen Lehrstuhl, der sich der Kunst Afrikas, ihrer Geschichte und ihrer Wirkung in Europa und weltweit widmen wird. Die Professur wird während ihrer Aufbauphase fünf Jahre lang mit 1,65 Millionen Euro von der Alfred Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-Stiftung in Essen gefördert.
Damit soll der kulturellen Eigenständigkeit der afrikanischen Kunst und ihrer Bedeutung für die Moderne Rechnung getragen werden. Darüber hinaus soll die Stiftungsprofessur "dazu beitragen, dem für die Zukunft Europas so bedeutenden Kontinent eine erweiterte Aufmerksamkeit zu schenken."

Japanese MotionPortrait is a software that animates still photos, turning them into moving, smiling and talking 3D models. The guys of Cubo.cc takes this an build it into a flash animation as a nearly lifelike model, which follows your cursor around the screen like its a fly on the wall. It twinkers and smiles and have very red eyes, perhaps becaouse of following so much cursors all the time.

Pecha Kucha: The art of presentation

Pecha Kucha is a japanese invention. Each presenter is allowed 20 images, each shown for 20 seconds each - giving 6 minutes 40 seconds of fame before the next presenter is up. This keeps presentations concise, the interest level up, and gives more people the chance to show. Its more meaningful than powerpoint karaoke but also funny. Pecha Kucha nights are now happening in 114 locations globally - also in Berlin and Cologne, of course not in Munich.

Blinder Maler gewinnt Youtube-Award

Die Farbe weiß fühlt sich an wie Zahnpasta, schwarz wie Öl: John Bramblitt, Kunststudent an der University of North Texas (UNT), malt impressionistische Bilder - obwohl er inzwischen erblindet ist. Der Reporter Bob Phillips hat den Künstler porträtiert - und dafür den YouTube-Award in der Kategorie "Inspiration" gewonnen:

Not so fine arts in Rwanda: Walls and design

In Kigali, the capital of Rwanda you can see a lot of advertising, painted onto walls - bill boards are not common. In the center of Kigali you can see this artwork bill boards. I was told, that these three boards are part of an ongoing art project, but I cant find out any details.

Common designs and paintings are very rough, as you can see on the pictures, I have made:

Kigali Artist Village: 'Caplaki'

In Kigali, the capital of Rwanda I have had the opportunity to visit Caplaki, the 'Village des Artistes de Kigali'. It is found outside the center of Kigiali.

I about a dozen huts mostly African artisan craftwork is sold: masks, spears, idols and all sort of wooden stuff. But a few of the dealers are also artists. Between all this traditional staff I have found a few paintings. You can see them here:

Imigongo - Fine Arts in Rwanda

Imigongo paintings are a truly indigenous Rwandan art form. Imigongo were originally created and developed by Kakira, the son of the king in the Kibungo region in the east of Rwanda near the Tanzanian border, who used them to decorate the interior of his dwelling.

Simple, classic abstract motifs and stark, modern colors characterize the original imigongo designs. In original, the artists use natural pigments ranging from white and black to ochre. I have found this Imigongo art in one of the few shops, which sells "traditional african artwork", especially spears and masks and so on. These squares are made of wood - no cow dung was detected.

Whereas the traditional motifs are geometrical, since a couple of years, more modern pattern have also been used in the Kigali of today:

Sculpure about black women slavery

I have found in Black looks blog an article about Anastácia Escrava, an Angolian princess, who was kidnapped and forced to become the mistress of her white master in Brazil. Anastacia resisted her capture, her rape and abuse and for that she was forced to wear a metal muzzle. In the blog you can see a sculpture of Matt Branson (and read a poem) about this "Muzzled wounds of slavery". Both are indeed very impressive.

Coffee Art in Kigali

There is a very fine internet cafe in the heart of Kigali, the "Boubon Coffee". There you can surf and drink fine coffees from the Akagera region of Rwanda. And you can look onto wand filling artworks in the cafe.

The nice thing of the artworks is, that they are made out of coffee and other materials, connected with coffee:
